15 Tips to Succeed in Your Next Job Interview

Although we are completely submerged in a technologically advanced world, and new gadgets have taken over our day to day lives, there are some things that just don´t change. Amongst these is the (often feared) job interview. Social media often plays an important role in the selection process but, even then, in the end there will always be an in-person interview, a one-on-one, between the company and the candidate that could possibly throw everything away or could help elevate you to an almost sealed deal. This is why we´re going to give you our advice on how to tackle an interview.

To go up against the feared interview and to obtain the best results –getting hired-, we need to control and remember how we got there: the network that we have established with the company, the information that we have given them or the ones they´ve had access to, and the resources the company has utilized to investigate more personal aspects of ourselves as prospects. In the latter point, we are specifically talking about the formerly mentioned social media, where we need to take care of what we say, what we do, and who can have access to what.

It is also imperative that we expand whatever knowledge we have about the company to be able to contribute with concrete ideas when it comes to explaining how we fit the profile that´s being requested, that we can take part in company projects, and to show real knowledge and genuine interest for the company in which we want to work in.
When we are interested in something, we dive into it and it becomes something “ours.” This is what the company is expecting of the candidate who will obtain the position. The interview is the ideal moment to show and confirm this, so: “personalize your resume and take advantage of collaboration.¨

Various types of interviews exist, every interviewer is different, and every job opportunity demands different and specific knowledge and aptitudes… Meaning, it is a convolution of things that altogether do not lend themselves to become a stable art form where you can get a step-by-step list of what to do. Either way, it does not hurt to go over one or two lists that could possibly come in handy (or not). Here, at mitula we created 15 tips for job interviews:

1. Be punctual.
2. Watch how you dress and take care of your personal hygiene. Dress properly, according to your personality and the job you aspire to have.
3. Have in hand copies of your resume/CV.
4. Be proper. Greet them with a handshake and a smile on your face, look at them in the eyes, don´t sit until you´re told to, don´t treat them casually unless they do to you, and, whatever happens, bid them farewell and give them thanks.
5. Turn off your cellphone, don´t smoke, and if they offer you a drink ask for a non-alcoholic one.
6. Express yourself in a clear, concise, structured manner and finish your sentences. Watch your language and avoid silences, searching hard for a word, one syllable answers or answers that cut the conversation short, and fillers.
7. Always speak with education and respect for your past jobs, companies, bosses, or coworkers.
8. Be positive. Turn your “weaknesses” around and avoid “no.” Don´t bed for the position –but show enthusiasm- and don´t try to find out in that moment if you have any possibility of being hired.
9. Maintain your posture and hold good eye contact. Sit straight, not at the edge of your chair (shows insecurity) or not hunched over (shows lack of respect). Don´t put your elbows on top of the table, don´t cross your arms (it´s a defensive position), and avoid any tics and habits such as biting your nails or clicking your pen (amongst others).
10. Define yourself with five qualified adjectives. Justify this. It is not necessary to fully describe in chronological order your life´s work.
11. Be proactive. Ask about any promotion possibilities, in the company or in the job position.
12. Don´t sell yourself to high or too low, indicate a minimum and a maximum and do it when they ask you.
13. Be honest.
14. Use your common sense.
15. Look at the fitire. Remember everything you have achieved thus far and set goals for where you want to be professionally in the future and the near future.

Obviously, interviewing is a before, during, and after process. All three parts have their importance. Tackling all three parts together gives us a better shot and makes every interview we do a “special” one. In every process you have to find these aspects that will make your process special and will help you stand out from the rest of the candidates.
